'It’s Good for Me to Score more Goals if I Want to Reach this Level of Messi and Ronaldo - Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard has revealed that he is working on becoming more selfish so he can reach the levels set by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. His admission comes after his team-mate Cesc Fabregas and Chelseamanager Antonio Conte made some highly contrasting comments about him thinking more for himself. Fabregas urged Hazard to be more selfish to help him reach the levels of Messi.
However Conte said he would rather lose matches than have selfish players in his side.
‘He [Fabregas] is not the only one to say that to me. A lot of people say to me you need to be more selfish,’ Hazard told Sky Sports. ‘But when I’m on the pitch sometimes I prefer to pass the ball. I sometimes want the other one to shine, not me. ‘If I can go alone I will go alone, no worries. If I pass, the pass is better than to go alone. It’s simple.
‘But I try game after game to be more selfish as I know it’s good for me to score more goals if I want to reach this level of Messi and Ronaldo. I’m working on it.’
Fabregas said if Hazard were to become more selfish he could hit the levels set by his former Barcelona team-mate Messi.
‘Ability wise, there is only one player above him and we all know who he is: Messi. Ability-wise he’s up there with the best,’ ‘I’ve told him many, many times, he needs to be selfish sometimes and have that killer instinct to score more goals and then he will be whatever he wants to be. Fabregas said.
‘I’ve played with many players and sometimes when we have a counter attack and it’s two against two and he passes the ball, I tell him: “You have the capability to score by yourself. Do it”.’
Chelsea manager Conte completely disagrees however, telling reporters yesterday that selfish players make him sad.
’I don’t think a player like Messi is a selfish player. The first target for every great champion is to play for the team.
‘Put your talent in the team. The best players in the world don’t exist without the team.’
Conte added: ‘For me, it’s sad when I listen to this: one player must be more selfish to reach the top level? This is not my ideal of football.
‘I will never understand this. In my team I don’t want a selfish player, I’d prefer to lose a game than have a selfish player – I don’t want this and won’t accept this, never.’
