Brazil have become the first side to qualify for the 2018 World Cup following their victory over Paraguay last night. They recorded a 3-0 win in which Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring, Neymar scored a stunning solo goal and Real Madrid’s Marcelo got on the scoresheet.
Coupled with a shock defeat for Argentina and a loss for Uruguay, Brazil can now not finish below fourth in the South American qualifying group, meaning their place at next summer’s tournament in Russia is assured.
Brazil have been in tremendous form during qualification, with the win over Paraguay their eighth straight victory under manager Tite. During that run they’ve scored 24 goals and conceded just two, playing the stylish brand of football one associates with the yellow, blue and white of the Brazilian national team.
Russia are also certain to feature at the tournament due to their automatic qualification as hosts.
They and Brazil will be among the total of 32 teams who will take part in next summer’s extravaganza with England among those well placed to join them.
