Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola Set Unwanted Champions League Records as Man City Crash Out to Monaco
Pep Guardiola lost a stellar Champions League record as Manchester City were dumped out of the competition by Monaco in the last-16 of the tournament. City came into the second leg in control after winning the first game 5-3 at the Etihad, but Monaco scored three goals to ensure their progression.
It is the first time Guardiola has exited the Champions League at this stage with all his previous runs reaching at least the semi-final. Guardiola is also the unhappy owner of a second Champions League record as City became the first side to score five goals in the first leg and still be eliminated.
The City boss was visibly frustrated on the bench as he shouted and stamped his feet in disappointment. Monaco tore through City in the first half scoring two without reply before a Leroy Sane goal put the visitors back in control with 20 minutes left.
But City could not survive the renewed pressure from Monaco and were soon chasing the game again when Tiemoue Bakayoko headed past Willy Caballero from a free-kick.
The elimination ends any hope of major silverware for City this season with the Sky Blues out of the title race. The FA Cup is now the only realistic trophy City could win in Guardiola’s first season as manager.
