Romelu Lukaku Is not Ready for Chelsea Return, He Should Stay with Everton for Anther 12 Months at Least - Lan Wright
The former Arsenal striker is a big fan of the Everton man but is certain he has plenty to improve upon, with Goodison Park a better environment to hone those skills rather than at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku was sold by Chelsea to The Toffees in 2014 and currently leads the Premier League scoring charts after an electric season under Ronald Koeman.
But despite his fine form in front of goal in 2016/17, Wright claims there’s plenty of room for improvement and he should not rush into any move.
‘With Rom, no one can question his goalscoring. But there are a couple of rough edges which need smoothing out,’ he told The Sun.
‘Things like his link-up play and not moving outside the width of the penalty box quite so much.
‘His hold-up game can also get better. And if he sorts that, as scared as defenders are of him now, they’ll be absolutely petrified in future.
‘If I was in the shoes of Ross Barkley or Romelu Lukaku, I’d have no hesitation in sticking around for another 12 months at least.’
Both Barkley and Lukaku have been linked with switches to the Premier League’s elite after fine campaigns but Wright thinks patience is the key to their success at the top level.
‘If they think the pressure on them to deliver at Everton is high, it’s nothing to what they’d be under if they did move on,’ he added.
The pair would cost huge money and with that comes the demand to deliver from the off. Every week, with no exceptions.
‘That’s tough enough if you are talking about the finished article… someone at the peak of their powers who’s been there for ages. As good as Rom and Ross are already, they can still get better.
‘And for that reason I think they would be better advised to stay with the Toffees and hone their talents even more.
‘I just hope their advisors see it that way, too, because if they develop the way they’re going then they won’t be short of takers down the line.
‘In my opinion the pair of them could potentially play for any of the real top teams but they just need to show a bit of patience.’
