Statistics show that ‘the Special One’ now has a lower win percentage in the Premier League than two men who were fired due to a perceived lack of success. It’s been a highly disappointing campaign for the Red Devils following the excitement that Mourinho’s appointment generated last summer.
The Portuguese coach has enjoyed an exceptional career that has seen him win titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. It was thought that he, coupled with the club’s huge levels of spending in the transfer market, would have the club competing for major honours.
In fairness they’ve won the EFL Cup and will add the Europa League if they beat Ajax in the final next week. However their league campaign has been disastrous and they currently find themselves sixth in the table.
In recent weeks Mourinho has admitted his focus is on winning the Europa League and it’s coincided with Manchester United’s 25 Premier League game unbeaten run being ended by defeats to Arsenal and Tottenham.
Those losses have seen Mourinho’s win percentage dip to 47.2% – a figure below that of Van Gaal and Moyes.
Van Gaal’s win percentage in his first season at Old Trafford was 52.6% and then 50% in his second term. The Dutchman was sacked after that second season, with that decision emerging moments after he delivered the FA Cup.
Moyes meanwhile had a win percentage of 50% before he was sacked after 34 Premier League games in charge.
How have Sir Alex Ferguson's successors fared?
2013/14 – under Moyes
34 games, 17 wins, 6 draws, 11 defeats
Win percentage: 50%
2014/15 – under LvG
38 games, 20 wins, 10 draws, 8 defeats
Win percentage: 52.63
2015/16 – under LvG
38 games, 19 wins, 9 draws, 10 defeats,
Win percentage: 50%
(LvG overall win percentage: 51.32)
2016/17 – under Mourinho
36 games, 17 wins, 14 draws, 5 defeats
Win percentage: 47.2%
The figures will be a worry for Mourinho who has been doing his best to talk up the club’s successes in cup competitions while simultaneously pointing to a long injury list and busy fixture schedule.
There is no suggestion the former Chelsea manager will be fired, but with another big spending spree expected this summer, surely Mourinho will be at risk if the win percentage doesn’t improve next season.
