Victor Anichebe Released by Sunderland

Nigerian striker, Victor Anichebe has been released by English Championship club, Sunderland AFC. The 29-year-old is one of 11 players released by the club on Friday. Sunderland AFC got relegated from the English Premier League at the end of last season and have now let go a host of top players that also includes South African midfielder, Steven Piennar.

Anichebe made 18 Premier League appearances for Sunderland last season, scoring three goals for the Black Cats in their ultimately futile bid to remain in the English top flight.

Speculations had been rife that Anichebe would leave the club in the eventual case of relegation but he stated when quizzed on the subject two months ago that he was remaining focused on staying fit.

“I love it here (at Sunderland),” he told the Newcastle Chronicle.

“Before I got injured I felt great, performances were good, someone was saying that outside (of Chelsea’s Eden) Hazard I was one of the highest ranked attackers in the league, so I’ve enjoyed it.

“The fans have been great to me, it is a really great club, so whenever I go out there I try as hard as I can.

“This injury was meant to keep me out for 12 or 13 weeks but I came back after nine, because I wanted to help the team because I know I can with the different style I bring.

“It’s a great club, great stadium, great training facilities, great fanbase, it’s a shame we are where we are.

“I’m not thinking about (where I will play next season) at the moment, I just need to stay fit and help us get some wins, for the fans here and for ourselves,” he said.

Anichebe has previously played for Everton and West Bromwich Albion, both in the English Premier League between 2006 and 2016.

Chelsea Winger Suffers 'Multiple Fractures', Says Chelsea Antonio Conte

Ahead of the Blues' next pre-season clash with Bayern Munich in Singapore, Conte confirmed Pedro must wear a protective mask after 10 days of rehabilitation. Conte said: "The situation was more serious. I hoped it would be only concussion. He had multiple fractures but I think with a mask in 10 days he could come back to work with us." The Spaniard was clattered by Arsenal goalkeeper Ospina during their 3-0 win over Arsenal in Beijing on Saturday and was sent home to England with concussion the next day. The 29-year-old had left the field at Bird's Nest Stadium groggy and hobbling, with visible cuts to his face and head. The signing of a proven world-class forward such as Alexis Sanchez is just what Manchester United need to compete for the biggest prizes, former Tottenham manager Gerry Francis has said. Sanchez, 29, joined United on a four-and-a-half-year contract from Arsenal on Monday, 22 January, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving in the opposite direction in a straight-swap deal. "Sanchez is a real goal-scorer, he's talented and he's aggressive around the box and he makes things happen, he can pull teams through," he told Sky Sports.Francis described the Chilean forward as a match-winner who will aid United in their quest to win silverware by adding some much-needed potency to their attack. "It's [about] the present, you're looking to win trophies and looking to win competitions and, sometimes, you need to buy and have the finished article and Sanchez is certainly that. "It just makes them as a squad that much stronger. Certainly, a much bigger goal-threat with Sa...
