Alvaro Morata Makes History in Chelsea Superb Win against Atletico Madrid

Alvaro Morata made history with his second-half goal for Chelsea in the side’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Antonio Conte’s men took a massive leap towards the knockout stages of the competition as Morata found the net with his head in the 59th minute before Michy Batshuayi’s last-gasp winner for the Blues in injury time.

Morata, who joined from Atleti’s arch-rivals Real Madrid in July, was relentlessly jeered at the Wanda Metropolitano but Chelsea’s summer signing got the last laugh on Wednesday evening. The Spaniard became the first opposition player ever to score at the ground after Atleti moved out of the Calderon ahead of the 2017/18 campaign – and Batshuayi soon became the second.

After the goal, Morata said: ‘Because of my past it’s always a good feeling [to score against Atletico Madrid]. ‘To make the first goal in a new stadium – I’m very happy.’

Asked if the goal meant more because it was against Atletico Madrid, Morata replied: ‘No, it’s the same.

‘It’s a new stadium, it’s a good team and, obviously, I’m very happy.’
