Monaco Appoint Ex-Chelsea Technical Director Michael Emenalo as New Sporting Director

AS Monaco have confirmed they have appointed Michael Emenalo as the club's sporting director on 27 November. The 52-year-old was the technical director at Chelsea and decided to end his association with the Premier League winners on 6 November. The former Nigerian international told Chelsea TV that he wanted to see his "young kids grow," which convinced him to leave the west London club.

However, Emenalo has taken over the role as the French champions' sporting director in less than a month. At Monaco, he will be in charge of all "sporting matter" under the leadership of club's Vice-President & CEO, Vadim Vasilyev.

A statement on Monaco's official website read, "AS Monaco are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Emenalo to the role of Sporting Director. He will take responsibility for all sporting matters, under the leadership of Vadim Vasilyev, vice-president & CEO."

During Emenalo's time at Chelsea, the Blues went on to win three Premier League titles, Champions League, Europa League, three FA Cups and the League Cup. He went on to stress it was Vasilyev's desire to see him at Stade Louis II made it a easier for him to agree to join Monaco.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for me in a high quality project. AS Monaco has shown great progress for several seasons and I am convinced that the future will be just as ambitious," Emenalo told the Ligue 1 winners' official website.

"Vadim Vasilyev's willingness to see me join AS Monaco was decisive for me, it was a natural choice for me after my decision to leave Chelsea."

The former defender was a key figure in helping Chelsea sign few of their star players, which includes the likes of Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and N'Golo Kante. Vasilyev stressed his technical experience and know-how in the scouting network convinced him to bring Emenalo to the club.

"I have been following Michael Emenalo's work for some time and am delighted to have him here at Monaco. I was closely involved in bringing him in," Vasilyev explained.

"His know-how in the scouting network, and the technical experience he has gained at one of the most successful clubs of recent years, are the reasons that led us to offer him this ambitious challenge. This appointment is a further sign of our ambition and our desire to be as competitive as possible."
